Application skills of heat sublimation transfer paper

The composition of ink-jet heat transfer papers is similar to that of a sandwich: the top layer is coated and is designed to absorb ink and to separate dye; the bottom layer is also coated and is  designed to prevent warps; while the middle layer is consists of base paper. Together the three layers make up the ink-jet heat sublimation transfer paper and each layer influences the quality of the final products.The more balanced they are matched to each other, the better the results would be. Otherwise, various problems will show up during the usage. Our company is always aiming to improve the quality of these three layers of material by choosing high quality materials and using state-of-the-art coating production facility. The following is a brief introduction of how to use ink-jet heat sublimation transfer paper:

#1: Storage of transfer paper

Upon receipting goods, customers should always first make a visual inspection to see if any of the transfer paper has been damaged during the shipment:

a). 1.Check if there is any breakage to the plasticpackaging of the transfer paper and check if the wrapping paper has gottendamp.

2. Check if cartons have been severely strained, hence making the roll paper inside deformed.

3. Conditions of perforated packaging cartons and punctured transfer paper etc. may affect ink-jet printing effects. Customers should take photos of them and refuse to receipt the goods:

b). There is a seven-month shelf life of ink-jet heat sublimation transfer paper. Try to use the paper arrived earlier then the one arrived later.

c). Transfer paper should be kept in a cool, dry place, and also away from direct sunlight. It’s better to store the paper under constant temperature and humidity in air-conditioned rooms. The ideal storage condition is a relative humidity of  70%RH under 10-30℃. In order to avoid moisture, transfer paper should be stacked horizontally on the pallets. Transfer paper should also be stacked in the shape of pyramid, orstacked separately according to width size. The height of stacked layers of transfer paper should not exceed that of the marks on the cartoons, usually less than 5 layers.

#2: Printing of transfer paper

a) . The printing environment’s humidity should be controlled at around 45-70%RH, as if the air is too crisp, the paper will warp easily. Then when jet printing in large amounts of ink, the transfer paper may arch so it may stretch out and collide into the printing heads and cause malfunctioning.

If air is too damp, then it may cause the reduction of drying rate of transfer paper and the irregularity of transfer paper’s stretch at both ends of the paper. Please install and turn on air conditioning units in the ink-jet printing rooms. Only under stable environmental  ink-jet print be done successfully. If there isn’t any air conditioning at the moment, then as an alternative, please peel off the plastic packaging one or two days before printing, which would allow the paper to be exposed to the air and this could adjust the moisture within the paper. This will help to stretch the transfer paper before hand, as it absorbs the moisture before printing. This way, the arching and stretching due to an excessive absorption of ink whilst in print can be avoided.

b). When the RH is very high, the base paper may stretch unevenly due to the different moisture absorption on the left and right ends. Printing in such condition proves to be difficult as the patterns may drift or the paper may jam the machine and wrinkle itself. The remedial measureis to place a clean steel tube between the feed side and unreeling side of the printing machine. Then fasten a suitable weight at both ends of the steel tube,so that the transfer paper can be kept smooth and exert a proper tension before it was fed into the printing machine.

c). Transfer paper will go soft when it absorbs too much moisture in the air, making it easily wrinkle whilst going through pinch rollers. A remedy for this is to take off some small springs from the pinch rollers at intervals. This can reduce the pressing force in order for the printing machine to feed paper smoothly.

d). The printing surface of SUNLEY paper is rolled outwardly. Customers need to confirm the printing surface before printing.  When customers can’t decide which side is the printing one, then they can use fingers to shed some clean water on the both sides of the transfer paper. The one with heavier soapy feeling is the printing surface.

e). Customer should wear fine-clothed gloves to prevent the surface of transfer paper from being contaminated by finger prints when the paper is being put into the printers.

f). Each time a new roll of transfer paper is put into use, customer should firstly print one small standard color block (whichis a pattern composed of CMYK - the four or six colors that customers are familiar with) on the new paper, and then do the transfer printing test. This test is to ensure that each roll of paper has the same color output. If customer find any color dissimilarity, then they should try their best to find out the causes and resolve it.

g). Customer should print the testing strips frequently in the printing process. This could ensure the fluency of inks flowin printing heads and the consistency and exactness of colors so that there isno printing defects due to blocking of printing heads

h). In the scenario of rolling while printing, customer should turn on the internal heater and set a suitable temperature or turn onthe external air drying equipment. This is to ensure that the back surface of transfer paper will not be contaminated with printing colors and cause product defect.

#3: Storage of printed paper

a). Printed transfer paper should be stored in roll whenever it’s possible.

b). Keep the paper roll in a loose plastic bag and keep it upright; don’t seal the plastic bag so that the moisture from the transfer paper can be evaporated into the air.

c). It is better to store the printed transfer paper in a lower humidity environment (humidity ≤55%RH; temperature15-30℃), which is beneficial for the moisture evaporation of transfer paper.

d). Put aside printed transfer paper for at least one hour before proceeding the heat transfer on fabric. It is recommended that heat transfer on printed transfer paper is conducted 5-hour after it’s printed,which would help for the drying of the transfer paper. If the heat transfer is done while the paper is not dry, the moisture in the paper would turn into vapor under the heat, which could damper the transfer effect due to fog, color difference, etc. So the transfer rate will be lowered when the transfer printis done before the paper is dried out. Keep the printed paper of different batch in the similar range of dryness would enhance the coherence of the transfer results.


#4: Heat Transfer of Transfer Paper

Fabric transfers can be divided into cut-parts transfer and cloth transfer.

a). Cut-parts transfer with plate heat sublimation transfer machine

1. Make a small transfer sample before mass production.Both the temperature and duration of sublimation heat transfer machine will influence printing colors. Establish a suitable temperature and transfer duration and keep it constant throughout the process.

2. Customer should make sure that the transfer paper has almost dried out before the heat transfer so as to avoid the incompletenessand dirty conditions of transfer.

3. Customer should clear up the transfer paper designs and fabrics by blowing before heat transfer. Customer should remove the scraps, cilium and other attachments of fabrics and transfer paper. The debris between fabrics and transfer paper will cause color transfer defects.

4. The reason for the ghost image is that the separation speed of the pressing plate is too quick so the upward airflow of the top board has attracted the transfer paper.In this case, users should reduce the throttle setting to slow down the separation speed of air cylinder (or oil cylinder) on the plate heat transfer machine. This will avoid the ghost image as a result of the collateral transfer printing caused by the sucking up and falling the printed transfer paper.

Users can also dip some clean water on the corners of transfer paper, this would make transfer paper attach tn the fabrics or choose to use sticky heat sublimation transfer paper to avoid the ghost image.

5. The colors of designs and patterns on transferred fabrics will fade and have water-striated patterns in some area, if the cushioning materials of the baseboard (such as cotton cloth, sponge,Paper board and so on) has absorbed too much moisture from the ink during the process of transfer. Users need to conduct an empty hot-pressing before actual transferring. This process will evaporate the moisture on the supporting cushioning material. When it’s plausible, replacingthe dry supporting materials in time could solve this issue.

6. Users need to check the wire side and the felt side of the fabrics. Many textiles’ wire side and felt side are similar in feel and appearance. Sometimes it is difficult to determine the sides. For example,a textile such as polyester or cotton that applied to sports wears polyester or nylon that applied to umbrellas and so on. If you mistakenly place the transfer paper on the side of cotton or nylon, then you will find that the transferCresult will be lighter in colors and the colors will fade easily when washed after transferring. In case you can’t find any problem with transfer machine,transfer paper, or ink then maybe you need to check if you have used the wrong side of textiles.

7. Uses should pay attention to operation safety inthe process of plate heat pressing;. Putting your hands into heat pressing board is strictly prohibiting. Also be altered on the high temperature burns.

b). Cloth transfer with roller heat sublimation transfer printing machines

There are many factors that may influence the quality of transfer in cloth transfer, therefore different skills are required to achieve best transfer performance.

1. The speed of transfer and the temperature of the heat roller should be suitable, and users need to wait for the temperature to fluctuate up and down at least 3 times. And wait until the temperature is stable.

2. Users need to adjust the pressure between blanket and the heat roller carefully according to the weight or stiffness of paper.

3. Uses need to maintain the consistency of tension levels at left and right sides of transfer paper and textiles so as to maintain the stable tension.

4. User need to make some transfer samples test run before mass transfer. Adjust the temperature and speed as they would influences the transfer result.

5. Users should clear up the transfer paper designs and fabrics by blowing before transfer. Customers should remove the scraps,cilium and other attachments of fabrics and transfer paper as these debris between fabrics and transfer paper will cause printing defects.

6. Users need to make sure printed transfer paperis dried out properly. Transfer paper with more moisture will generate a large amount of vapor during heat transferring process. The transfer paper will lose its stiffness and develop faults such as twisted movement and water ripples due to its softness.

7. Users can cut the fore part of transfer paper and textiles into the shape of an inverted V to let the middle part go inside first when transferring. Users can also use the cardboard which is wider than the width of transfer paper to lead the front end. This can ensure the full width of cloth enter into transfer printing machine in one go smoothly. This is to prevent any wrinkles of canting pull during transfer printing.

8. To prevent the ghost image as the result of the retouch and secondary sublimation, users need to separate paper and textiles quickly during the transfer printing.

9. Uses should pay attention to operation safety inthe process of plate heat pressing. Putting your hands into heat pressing boardis strictly prohibiting. Avoid high temperature burns also.
